Cruise through South West France
Canl Du Midi
Channelling through south-west France to the Mediterranean is the Canal du Midi. On its way, it traverses rolling vineyards and fields of sunflowers, medieval castles and ancient, fortified towns.
One such town is Carcassonne, an enchanting hilltop citadel that dominates the skyline with its majestic, turreted fortress, La Cité. The cobbled, 13th-century Ville Basse (Lower Town) hosts cafes, markets, boutiques and bistros. East of Toulouse, the plane-tree-lined canal enters the Minervois wine region.
Along the canal, sun-dappled towpaths offer idyllic walking and cycling opportunities. Neighbouring Minervois is ruggedly beautiful whist Corbières is famed for its Cathar castles and rich, red wines. Branching off the Canal du Midi, the Canal de la Robine leads to Narbonne. The attractive town is home to an historic cathedral and the medieval Archbishops’ Palace. The fabulous indoor food emporium will delight your senses.

Impossibly seductive, Provence offers a heady mix of fragrant lavender and poppy fields, sunbaked hillsides and cavernous gorges and medieval villages and vibrant market towns. Rising from this sylvan scenery is the former papal city of Avignon, whose immaculately preserved ramparts protect the splendid Palaisdes, Papes, the summer home of a succession of Popes during the 14th century.
Next to the palace is Avignon’s famous bridge, which, according to legend, was built by a shepherd — later Saint Bénezet, on instructions from God. Equally fabled is the wine, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which was produced for Pope Clement V and subsequent holy leaders.
Another Provençal gem is Arles, the Roman town that inspired Vincent van Gogh. From his arrival in 1888,its warmth and vitality lead him to produce 300 works, including representations of the cafe terrace on the Place du Forum, the Langlois Bridge and the Sunflower series.

This region is characterised by pine forests and unspoilt plains, dotted with lakes, waterfalls, vineyards and mountains, as well as picturesque villages and fortified towns.Its vibrant capital, Besançon, dates from Roman times—hip bars and bistros sit beside Classical arches and Renaissance palaces.
Its magnificent UNESCO-listed citadel, built in the 17th century, commands views of the entire area.Don’t miss the impressive Roman Battant Bridge, the Muséede Beaux Arts and the Cathedral of Saint-Jean, which houses the famous Astronomical Clock. Further along the Doubs is Dole, dominated by the Gothic Notre Dame church, which holds treasures, such as richly decorated Sainte Chapelle du Miracle de Faverney. Dole’s most famous son is Louis Pasteur; his former home is now a museum on the canal.
