South Africa vs England Test Cricket Results & History
Cricket in South Africa was established by the British, and the first tour by a side from England took place in 1888-1889. Played as a test match at Port Elizabeth meant South Africa became the third test nation behind Australia The longest test cricket match in history began on 3rd March 1939 in Durban. The touring England side required 41 runs to win at the end of the 9th day, but the match was declared a draw as the English players had to leave in order to catch their return ship home. The test is often referred to as the ‘timeless’ test, and the only one of its kind in history. South Africa did not participate in international cricket between 10 March 1970 and 10 November 1991 after the International Cricket Conference suspended South Africa in response to the South African Government’s policy of apartheid. A return to the international stage by the Proteas was followed with a mixed performance from the South African side. Despite containing some of the best players in the world, they gained a reputation as “chokers” as they failed three times to progress to the finals after making the semi’s of the Cricket World Cup. In more recent times, a rejuvenated Proteas team became the first team simultaneously ranked no1 in all three formats of the game (August 2012) though the South African team haven’t beaten England on home soil since 2000.
