Step into a cultural and culinary landmark

Stroll along canals flowing with history and into a city rich in culture and revolutionary spirit. Russia’s imperial capital never ceases to amaze Legend has it that in 1703, while boating on the River Neva, Peter the Great saw an eagle flying over Zayachy Island. Taking it as an omen, he laid the foundation stone for the Peter and Paul Fortress and what would fulfill his vision of a European city. In the 300 years since Peter opened the ‘window on the west’, this Venice of the North has had many faces. A magnificent city reflecting the majesty of the Russian Empire, it became the so-called cradle of the revolution under Lenin. During World War II it was a symbol of national pride. Today, it is Russia’s cultural capital, in which awe-inspiring architecture, grand palaces and vast museums reflect the city’s unique heritage. Nestled among the most celebrated landmarks on Nevsky Prospekt, Belmond Grand Hotel Europe serves as a time capsule of Russia’s illustrious past and a gateway into St Petersburg’s exciting present. Drawing guests from across the world for more than 140 years, The Grand Hotel Europe St Petersburg is the first port of call for your Russian adventure. There’s treasure around every corner.

Theatre or Ballet

Grand-Hotel-Europe-St-Petersburg St Petersburg is the home of ballet – the dance was first developed here from the 18th century onwards, with all of the most famous ballets being premiered here. As well as ballet, the city has a thriving musical scene, with many fine orchestras and performers. We can arrange tickets and transfers to and from your hotel to the performance of your choice. The playbill for St Petersburg’s theatres is not released until around six weeks before performances. Therefore if you can be flexible over what date you attend a performance, and which theatre you go to, this will give you the maximum choice. A few of the more famous theatres are: The Mariinsky Theatre is one of St Petersburg’s, if not the world’s, great cultural landmarks. The home of the Kirov Ballet, whom many now consider to be the world’s most accomplished company, the Mariinsky stands with its Moscow twin, the Bolshoi Theatre, as one of the world’s great ‘homes’ of the art. The Mussorgsky Theatre, located just off Nevsky Prospekt performs more contemporary works and is of a very good standard. The Hermitage Theatre is in the Winter Palace, and was built on the orders of Catherine the Great. It is a small and beautiful venue.
