Turandot was the final opera written and composed by Giacomo Puccini, however, he died in 1924 before he could finish it. It was completed by Franco Alfano in 1926 and was first performed on 25 April 1926.- Act 1 The Opera is set in Ancient China and tells the story of a Prince who falls in love with a cold princess. In order to marry Princess Turandot, suitors must answer three riddles and if they get them wrong they are sentenced to death. The Prince of Persia is the latest suitor to get the riddles wrong and is sentenced to die at moonrise. The crowds are blood-thirsty and they push forwards and in the midst of the hustle and bustle an old man falls to the ground and his faithful servant Liu calls for help. From the crowd appears a handsome young man and he recognises the master and servant as his long lost father, Timur, the deposed King of Tartary. Afraid for his own life Calaf tells Timur never to say his name out loud as they are still running from their enemies who took over their Kingdom. Timur tells Prince Calaf that Liu has been his most faithful servant and when Prince Calaf asks her why, she says it is because Calaf once smiled upon her many years ago. When the moon appears in the sky the Prince of Persia is about to be executed but the crowd sympathises with this young man with such a kind demeanour and try to change the mind of Princess Turandot to spare him his life. However, she dismisses their cries for clemency and cruelly tells the executioner to carry on with his duty. As soon as Prince Calaf sees Turandot he falls in love with her and is determined to answer the three riddles and marry her. Three of the Princesses’ ministers, Ping, Pang and Pong try to change his mind as they do not want any more bloodshed but Prince Calaf has made his decision. He bangs the gong and Turandot accepts his challenge.
- Act 2 The Ministers, Ping, Pang and Pong are talking about Turandot’s previous unsuccessful suitors and how they would like to be free of the Princess’s bloody reign. As the trumpets sound the crowds gather under the warm morning sun to watch Prince Calaf try to answer Princess Turandot’s riddles. Before she arrives, her father, who is sitting on his throne, pleads with Prince Calaf to walk away from this challenge but Calaf refuses. When Princess Turandot arrives she begins by telling the story of her ancestor, Princess Lou-Ling who was brutally murdered by a conquering prince and wishing to avenge her death Turandot explains she has turned against all men and no man will ever possess her. Turandot then begins her first riddle: “What is born each night and dies at dawn?” “Hope!” Prince Calaf declares. Correct. Turandot begins her second riddle: “What flickers red and warm like a flame, yet is not fire?” “Blood.” Calaf is right again. This time the Princess is unnerved. No one has correctly answered her second riddle before. She asks her third riddle: “What is like ice yet burns?” There is silence from the crowd but a few moments later Calaf says “Turandot” and he is right. The crowd cheers and is thankful that Calaf will not be killed and no further lives will be lost in this way. However, Princess Turandot realises what this means and pleads with her father to spare her marriage to this stranger. Her father refuses but Prince Calaf decides to give her a riddle of his own and lets her have until dawn to solve it. If she answers correctly he will die but if she gets it wrong she must marry him. She accepts. The riddle is “What is my name?”
- Act 3 That evening Calaf hears the decree that no one in Peking will sleep until Turandot finds out the name of her suitor. If she does not find out his name, everyone within the city will be killed. Prince Calaf sings the famous aria, Nessun Dorma (nobody sleeps). Ping, Pang and Pong try to convince Calaf to change his mind but he refuses. A mob threatens Calaf but they are distracted by soldiers dragging in Liu and Timur. Calaf tries to convince the mob that only he knows his own name but Liu who is ever faithful to Timur cries out that she knows the name of the stranger. She is then taken to Turandot who orders her to be tortured until she gives up the name she knows. But Liu would rather die than betray Calaf. Turandot is impressed by Liu’s loyalty and she asks how she is able to remain silent. “Love,” answers Liu. But then Liu grabs a dagger from one of he soldiers and kills herself. Calaf calls Turandot the Princess of Death and kisses her forcefully and she begins to weep, for that is the first time she has ever been kissed. Calaf then tells her his true name. Prince Calaf is sitting on the throne when Turandot turns to the crowd and tells them that she has learned the name of this stranger and his name is “Love.” Lyrics from the famous Aria Nessun Dorma
- Italian Text Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma! Diledua, o note! Tramontate, stelle! Tramontate stele! All’alba vincero! Vincero, vincero!
- English Translation Nobody shall sleep!… Nobody shall sleep! Even you, o Princess, In your cold room, Watch the stars, That tremble with love and with hope. But my secret is hidden within me, My name no one shall know… No!… No!… On your mouth I will tell it when the light shines. And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!… (No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.) Vanish, o night! Set, stars! Set, stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win! It was actually made famous by Pavarotti singing this Aria at the 1990 Football World Cup in Italy.
