With the foothills of the Maures Massif rising behind it, Saint-Tropez Bay is one of the most picturesque sites of the South of France, and is notoriously well-known as the international jet-set rendezvous. The old fishing village is today a lively seaside resort, which has kept its Provençal culture and traditions. You will enjoy a walking tour of the old town with its picturesque atmosphere and its lively squares such as the famous “Place des Lices” where the locals meet to play “boules”. Entering by one of the two fortified gates, Le Portail or Le Portalet, you will commence your visit with a guided walking tour through the narrow streets that lead uphill towards the Castle, now home to the Town Hall. En route, you will pass the spectacular bay of Camp de Mar and then head to Capdellá where the Bodegas Santa Catarina is located. The most striking part of this Bodega is the fantastic sandstone cave where their quality wine matures in oak barrels. The Bodega grows French grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay and produces approximately a half million bottles per year. The soft Mediterranean breeze creates a unique microclimate in the Tramuntana Mountains that has an effect on the French grape varieties and explains the high quality of the Mallorcan wines. Stroll at your leisure through the impressive Great Hall, Hunting Room, kitchen, and into the wine cellar, where you may sample some locally produced vintages. “Mi casa es su casa” has never rung so true. Your next stop is Bellver Castle, which was constructed in the early 1300s, during the reign of Jaime I of Mallorca. Designer shops, fine restaurants, neighboring beaches and a thriving nightlife add to the excitement Ibiza has become world famous for. Ibiza Beach Break: Seated Tour Duration: 4 hours For those who are ready to enjoy a relaxing day at the beach, this tour is exactly what you are looking for. A 20-minute coach transfer from the pier brings you to the longest stretch of beach on the island, Playa D’en Bossa. While it dates back 2,500 years, San Carlos is recognized less for its past and more for its laidback, tranquil atmosphere, which in the 1960s attracted a community of artists and hippies. Returning to the coast, you will then enjoy some free time to explore Santa Eulalia, a resort town with extraordinary restaurants, exquisite shopping and inspiring art galleries. Bodegas Torres Wine Tour: Light Activity /Walking Duration: 5 hours Some of the world’s finest wines are born in the vineyards of Spain. During this excursion you will visit a local winery and experience how a family wine is produced and bottled. Boarding your coach at the pier, you’ll start your day with a panoramic tour of Barcelona, and before proceeding to Torres Winery, you will enjoy spectacular views of the harbour and the Olympic Stadium from the Park of Montjuïc. A scenic drive of just over 1-hour brings you to the village of Vilafranca del Penedès, which has a reputation for producing wonderful wines, and the Bodegas Torres Wine Estate. This well-respected winery was founded in 1870 by Jaime Torres and at this time, is the family winery that has the most extensive vineyards in the area. The winery has remained in the family for generations and is currently managed by the fourth generation of the Torres family. Along with the winery you will visit today, the Torres family also owns several other wineries in Spain, one in Chile and one in California. Upon arrival, you will be treated to a tour of the cellars and observe how this family wine is produced and bottled – from planting vineyards to winemaking, from the ageing of the wine in the cellars, to the design and marketing of the Torres products. From this port city, it is a short transfer to Taormina, resting 820 feet above the sea and overlooking imposing Mount Etna. In the early 20th century, Taormina became a colony for expatriate artists and writers, including D H Lawrence. Highlights of any tour of this city would include the remarkably preserved Roman-style Greek Theater, whose acoustics are still appreciated in performances today; the splendid 15th century Palazzo Corvaia; and the Odeon, a small Imperial Age theater set amidst colorful public gardens. Hidden Sicily – in the Footsteps of the Godfather Moderate Activity/Walking Duration: 4 1/2 hours Experience Sicily’s unparalleled beauty as featured in The Godfather film series during this scenic tour of Naxos, Savoca and Taormina. Depart the pier for the brief drive through the small town of Naxos, founded by Greek colonizers in the 8th century BC. While driving along the coastal road, you will pass by villas, flowering gardens and picturesque villages en route to Santa Teresa, the largest coastal town between Messina and Taormina. From here, a picturesque road will take you inland to scenic Savoca, a village nestled between two hills. In a private house at the entrance of the village is the Bar Vitelli, which features a collection of local artisans’ tools and photographs taken when Francis Ford Coppola was in this area filming some scenes for The Godfather II. Upon arrival, you will visit the Cappuccini Church, whose crypt houses 37 mummified bodies (standing in niches and fully-dressed) of 18th and 19th-century friars and nobles. There are about 30 steps to descend and ascend to reach the catacombs. After visiting Bar Vitelli, you will begin a slow walking tour along the village’s main street, then continue up the hill. Along the way, you will pass by several 15th- and 16th-century churches and the remains of a Norman Castle, and take in magnificent views of the valley. Next, you will proceed for a brief drive toward Taormina, and a visit to Forza d’Agro. This charming little village overlooks the Arab-Norman castle of Capo Sant’Alessio, and the coastline towards Messina and the strait. In 1990, Al Pacino and Sophia Coppola came here to film some scenes for The Godfather III. From the main square, a lane leads up to circular steps that ascend to the Gothic-Catalan portal in front of the Church of St. Agostino, or Triade, which features a pleasant 15th-century facade. After a visit to the Baroque-styled Chiesa Madre, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier. Please note: This tour involves extensive walking over uneven surfaces. Sicilian Wine Roads Light Activity /Walking Duration: 4 1/2 hours Explore Sicily’s historic winemaking tradition during this picturesque half-day visit to the wine region near Mt. Etna. Sicily is Italy’s third most important wine and food destination after Tuscany and Piedmont. The distinct flavor of Sicily’s wine is due to the volcanic soil from Mt. Etna, the smoldering volcano that rises nearly 11,000 feet above the sea. Depart the pier with your guide for a brief drive through the small town of Naxos, founded by Greek colonizers in the 8th century BC. You will continue on to Randazzo, located between the Alcantara and Simeto Rivers, and founded in Byzantine times. The remarkably well-preserved Randazzo is the most attractive of Etna’s villages, and built entirely of black volcanic stone. Upon arrival, you will visit the main square and Cathedral of Santa Maria Church, first constructed in the early-13th century, and subsequently rebuilt several times. After a stop at a famous local patisserie in the Cathedral Square for a refreshing pistachio gelato, you will continue on to the Cottanera Estate. Its lands extend from the northern foothills of Mt. Etna at about 2,300 feet above sea level. The site of ancient volcanic eruptions, these lands are now extremely fertile, and continue down as far as the alluvial beds of the Alcantara River. The vineyards of Cottanera extend for 123 acres at 1,640 feet above sea level. You will tour the vineyard and cellar, then have an opportunity to taste their wines, which will be accompanied by some local delicacies. Following your scenic vineyard tour and tasting, you will re-board the coach for the 75-minute return drive to the pier. Please note: This tour involves travel over uneven surfaces, with 15 very steep steps to climb and no wheelchair access to the wine cellar; therefore, this tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Taormina and Greco-Roman Theater Moderate Activity/Walking Duration: 4 hours The ancient city of Taormina is yours to discover during scenic and memorable visits to the Greek Theater, the Palazzo Corvaia and the Odeon. Depart the pier for the 6-mile drive from the port of Giardini Naxos en route to Taormina. A hilly road will lead to the coach parking area where your guided walking tour will begin. This beautiful and renowned tourist resort is a small, Medieval town perched atop a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna. During the tour, you will visit the Greek Theater, known for its stunning location. This Roman-style theater was reconstructed in the 2nd century AD. It is in excellent condition, and has marvelous acoustics that are still appreciated in contemporary performances of classical plays. From the upper tiers, you can take in spectacular views and photo opportunities of majestic Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano. Other highlights include exterior visits to the splendid, 15th-century Palazzo Corvaia and the Odeon, a small Imperial Age theater featuring public gardens blossoming with flowers and color. For a tranquil afternoon, stroll the San Anton Palace Gardens, artistically laid out in Three Villages – Attard, Lija and Balzan. Or, for spectacular vistas, take a day tour to Dingli Cliffs, which offer striking views of the sea and rugged coastline. Valetta is also a portal to day trips to nearby Mdina, with its landmark Baroque Cathedral of St. John; and Rabat, the provincial township that was once part of the Roman city of Melita, where you can explore several fascinating archaeological digs. A Taste of Malta Light Activity /Walking Duration: 4 hours No tour of Malta is complete without visiting the Mosta Dome, your first stop. The famed 19th century church is visible from almost anywhere on the island. Its interior is just as impressive, especially the inlaid marble floor and the gilded, carved stone flowers set around the dome. The old port, surrounded by an impressive city wall built by the House of Nemanjicc, is very well preserved and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Numerous other attractions include the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon in the old town (built in 1166), and ancient walls which stretch directly above the city. Nightlife also attracts tourists to Kotor with pubs, taverns, cafes, and nightclubs. Highlights of Montenegro Light Activity /Walking Duration: 5 hours This tour follows a route that inspired Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw to proclaim, “I have heard that the road to Cetinje via Kotor is one of the most beautiful in the world, and that is the reason I have come.” You, too, will be mesmerized by the road’s natural beauty, as you pass majestic mountains on one side and a stunningly beautiful bay on the other. In Cetinje, once the center of Montenegrin rule, you will visit The Museum of King Nikola, followed by a scenic ride along the Budva Riviera, a resort area renowned for its beaches. Once in Kotor, you’ll soon see why the town was deemed a World Heritage Site. The old section of Kotor is well preserved and surrounded by a protective wall built in the Middle Ages. Leisurely Kotor Light Activity /Walking Duration: 1 1/2 hours This tour focuses entirely on the World Heritage Site of Kotor, where much of the architecture has a distinctive Venetian flair, a reminder that the Republic of Venice once ruled it. Fortified since the early Middle Ages, Kotor is surrounded by a protective wall that has withstood countless sieges over the centuries. Numerous historically important buildings lie within the walls, such as the Cathedral of St. Triphon, an imposing Romanesque basilica built in 1166. You’ll notice that its nave is separated from the aisles by alternating square pillars and antique columns. History abounds in the compact Old Town, which is one of the best preserved along the Adriatic. In the Maritime Museum, Kotor’s rich seafaring history is on display. Other points of interest include the Cathedral of St. Duje, built on the remains of an ancient shrine purported to be the oldest in the world; and the Mestrovic Gallery, where the impressive works of Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic are available for viewing in this home and atelier. A Taste of Split Light Activity /Walking Duration: 4 hours Indulge your senses with the splendid beauty and flavors of Dalmatia’s largest city during this memorable tour. The Old Town of Split is built on and around the spectacular Roman Palace erected by the Roman Emperor Diocletian (born in Salona – today’s Solin) in the 4th century. Your first visit is to the amazing Ethnographical Museum which is situated in the very heart of Diocletian Palace, actually in the Emperor’s Apartment. The Museum building itself is very interesting since it is a combination of a beautiful medieval house and stately imperial rooms. Within its walls you will not only find a valuable collection of clothes, dresses and gowns, but also gain an interesting picture of life in Split throughout the centuries. You will also visit the Cathedral of St. Duje, the patron saint of the city. The cathedral is built on the remains of an ancient shrine that is thought to be the oldest of its kind in the world. An additional visit is planned to the charming Temple of Jupiter. Re-joining your coach, it’s a short drive to Tinita, a restored wine cellar located in a 100-year-old house near the renowned Bacvice Beach. This cellar, which has been converted into a unique enoteka, is comprised of thick stone walls that keep the temperature cool and provide a unique atmosphere. Tinita is home to a wide selection of wines from all over the world, with an emphasis on the wines of Dalmatia. Upon arrival, you will be served smoked ham, cheese and domestic desserts, accompanied by a special selection of Dalmatian wines served in handmade glasses. Entertainment will be provided by a group of local singers and musicians performing traditional Dalmatian songs. Your very special tour concludes with a return transfer to the ship. Krka River National Park Moderate Activity/Walking Duration: 7 hours Embrace Croatia’s pristine natural and geological beauty during this memorable tour and riverboat cruise in Krka National Park. Depart the pier for the drive through the Karst Sibenik hinterland en route to the Krka National Park. One of Croatia’s seven national parks, Krka encompasses 55 square miles, and is noted for its geological, geomorphologic, hydrological, biological, and landscape elements. The Krka River is also a distinctive natural phenomenon due to its specific biocenosis and formation of gypsum barriers. The entire area is rich with endemic species of vegetation, birds and fish. As a result of rigid conservation laws, this extraordinary area has been preserved in its original form. Upon arrival, you will take a guided tour of Krka National Park. The highlight of your tour will be a visit to the wonderful Skradinski Buk Waterfalls, which cascade over 17 natural barriers. The highest fall is 146 feet in height; Europe’s highest gypsum barrier. Above the falls, a large plateau offers spectacular panoramic views and photo opportunities. Depending upon availability, you may also be able view a small ethnological exhibition, and an old grinding mill that is still in operation to this day. If you wish, some free time is provided for you to further explore the immediate area around the falls via walking paths. Next, you will embark a riverboat for a cruise to the picturesque river town of Skradin. Here, you will be treated to a tasty but simple lunch featuring local cuisine and wine. The town’s prosperity has long been founded on maritime trade and today, this pulse is supported by the port of Koper which was founded 50 years ago and has allowed for Koper to become an important maritime gateway for Slovenia and other central and eastern European countries. This lovely city that faces the sea, enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm and dry summers. Visitors and residents alike are treated to pleasant seaside vistas while being embraced by soft breezes. On days when the sirocco wind blows, the sky can turn an amazing color of scarlet, only serving to add to the allure of this destination. Joining your local guide at the pier, your walking tour begins by climbing the 100 stairs that lead to the upper level of the town.
