Overview

This immaculately restored palazzo dates back to the 16th Century and retains its original elegance and lavish opulence. There are tall gilt mirrors, walls lined with silk wall hangings, frescos, delicate Murano chandeliers and full length windows allowing uninterrupted views of the Grand Canal. This beautiful hotel was the venue for George and Amal Clooney’s recent wedding in Venice. It may have been chosen for its idyllically situated outdoor private garden as well as its location and luxurious interior.

Salon

Rising from the Vestibule is a second staircase that leads to the fourth level of the palazzo. This houses the Salon – a regal, lofty-ceilinged lounge and relaxation area featuring a grand piano. The Salon is divided into two large areas with expansive windows providing commanding views of the Grand Canal.

Library

Situated adjacent to the Salon, the Library enjoys similar views. Lined with ‘Cuir de Cordoue’, embossed gold leather from the 16th century, the walls support the palazzo’s original walnut bookcases which hold the Count’s extensive collection of books.

Roof Terrace

Known as the ‘Altana’ and accessed via stairs and a lift, Aman Canal Grande Venice’s roof terrace is intimate in scale and offers panoramic views of the city’s rooftops. On a clear day, the Alps are visible in the distance. It is particularly pleasant to visit early in the morning or at sunset.

Gardens

Fronting the Grand Canal is the Canal Garden, one of very few private gardens on the canal. Mature trees and a quadrangle of verdant green grass provide the ideal setting for a relaxing hour or two, or an al fresco meal in the warmer months. Aman Canal Grande Venice has a second Private Garden which provides walking access to San Polo.

The Yellow Dining Room overlooks the Grand Canal with a magnificent feature fireplace and 19th Century hand painted Cesare Rotta ceiling mural. The Red Dining room features silk wall coverings and views overlooking the hotel’s Canal Garden. Both restaurants serve cuisine from the renowned chef Davide Oldani’s superb renditions of Italian favourites, including locally sourced soft-shell crab and razor clams directly from the Lagoon. Many ingredients come from the region’s farms, while the bread, pasta and ice cream are all made fresh in the hotel’s kitchen. There is also seasonal al-fresco dining in the warmer months in the Grand Canal Garden area, which is a feature of this hotel as outside gardens are rare in Venice. The quintessential Venetian dining experience of small antipasto plates are served under the flowering pergola accompanied by a traditional spritz of prosecco, Aperol, seltzer and an orange slice.

Drawing on elements of Swedish massage, reflexology and energy work, the Aman massage soothes body and mind, and can be combined with an exfoliation or wrap. The spa’s signature foot treatment soothes after a day exploring the canals. A Himalayan salt exfoliation rebalances the circulatory system, followed by a peppermint and arnica foot massage finished with a hot compress.

Rooms & Suites at the Aman, Venice

There are only 24 rooms and suites available at the Aman Canal Grande and unlike many hotels in Venice the rooms have not been divided up to increase the number of guests who can stay. The en-suite bathrooms are often as large as the bedrooms they serve. Many of the elegant rooms feature protected frescos and reliefs but furniture has been kept simple with contemporary sofas and furnishings.

History of the Aman Canal Grande

The palazzo in which Aman Canal Grande Venice is housed, Palazzo Papadopoli, was built in 1550 by the architect and follower of Sansovino, Gian Giacomo de Grigi, as commissioned by the Coccina family. The Coccinas were wealthy traders and seafarers who had recently moved to Venice from Bergamo. The palazzo was sold to the Tiepolo family in 1718 after the death of Francesco Coccina, the last descendant. Avid art collectors, the Tiepolos built an impressive library and gathered treasures from all over the world which were viewed by many notable figures of the time. The Tiepolos also employed the painter Giambattista Tiepolo to decorate rooms with frescoes which still remain today. The palazzo changed hands several times between 1837 and 1864 when it was acquired by the Papadopoli family. The brothers Count Nicolo and Angelo Papadopoli moved to Venice from Corfu in Greece, and Nicolo married Maddalena Aldobrandini who came from a wealthy family of intellectuals. The Papadopoli Aldobrandinis bought the palazzo and set about an ambitious renovation. In 1865 they hired architect Girolamo Levi, and entrusted the internal decoration of the piano nobile – the main living area of the palazzo – to Michelangelo Guggenheim. Guggenheim was a leading exponent of the Neo-Renaissance and Rococo styles, and he reinvented the space, turning the palazzo into one of the most significant examples of these styles in Venice. The palazzo was reimagined as the perfect home for entertaining, with access from the side canal for all services and deliveries. It also featured one of the first elevators in Venice, as well as electric powered chandeliers and an internal phone system. The brothers also bought two adjacent buildings which they razed in order to build two gardens – very unusual features in Venice. By 1882, the Papadopoli Brandolinis were entertaining the highest echelons of Venetian society. At the close of the 19th century, Vera Papadopoli Aldobrandini married Count Giberto Arrivabene with the palazzo as part of her dowry. Today, the palazzo is owned by her grandson, Count Giberto Arrivabene Valenti Gonzaga.
