TEATRO ANTICO DI TAORMINA
Teatro Antico di Taormina, Sicily
Teatro Antico di Taormina Amphitheatre was first built by the Ancient Greeks in the third century BC and reconstructed by the Romans.
Comprising of three areas: the stage, the orchestra and the cavea, Teatro Antico di Taormina is the second largest ancient theater in Sicily (after the Greek theatre of Syracuse).
The amphitheatre was designed to accommodate dramatic or musical performances for up to 5,400 spectators to be able to hear from wherever they were sat.
After the Punic Wars, the function of the ampitheatrea was to reflect Roman entertainment, including gladiatorial games.
Now over 2 millennia later, the spectacular setting is used to host theatre shows, concerts, operas and ballets and those who attend are guaranteed the most stunning views throughout.
